ESPERANTO
Mr. B. Donovan, the Auckland agent of the International Esperanto League for Postal and Telegraphic Affairs, was welcomed by members at the weekly meeting of the Wellington Esperanto Club on Monday night. He reported continued good progress of the movement in Auckland. The president, Mr. E. A. Hornblow. reported that during the week correspondence had been received by the club and individual members from Latvia, Rumania, Czecho-Slovakia. Denmark, France, Northern Rhodesia, and Sweden. After the enrolment of new members and the tuition period, an original three-act play by Mr. P. Mcßea, entitled "La Perla Kolringo" (The Pearl Necklace) was presented, those taking the leading roles being Mrs. I. Cooper (Mrs. Craggs), Mrs. E. A. Hornblow (the Countess Merlin), and Mr. L. Cooper (Mr. Craggs)-. Mr. G. Blong gave a short talk on dramatic art, and Mr. J. H. Thomas spoke on Esperanto as a recreational medium.
A well-attended meeting of the Karori Esperanto Societjr was held in the Parish Hall last night, Mr. Nelson Hill presiding. Mr Bernfeld, who conducted, the classes, remarked on the excellent progress made by the students, the examination papers showing a high standard for the short, time the members had been learning. In giving a talk on "Spanish Customs," Mr. Bernfeld told of the quaint relationship between host and guest, wherein it was customary for the host to make a gift to the guest of anything that appealed to him. To retrieve any treasures lost in this way. the unfortunate host had to return the visit and show an interest in his own article, which was ->ri returned to him.
