ADMIRAL SIR ROGER
BACKHOUSE

The death has occurred of Admiral Sir Roger Backhouse, former First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff, who x*esigned a month ago.
Admiral Sir Roger Backhouse was born in 1878. He served in the European War, in which he won the C.B. and C.M.G., and was Director of Naval Ordnance in 1920-22, Rear-Admiral Commanding the 3rd Battle Squadron of the Atlantic Fleet, in 1926-27, and Third Sea Lord and Controller of the
Navy in 1928-32. In 1932-34 he was Vice-Admiral Commanding the Ist Battle Squadron of the Mediterranean Fleet. In 1935 he was appointed Com-mander-in-Chief of the Home Fleet, shortly after his promotion to admiral's rank. In 1938 his appointment to the post of First Sea Lord and Naval Chief of Staff was announced.
MR. ARTHUR A. BURCH

SYDNEY, July 16.
The death has occurred of Mr. Arthur A. Burch, aged 63, the pioneer of automatic telephones in Australia.
