UNIVERSITY GRADUATES
(To the Editor.)
Six-, —The letter of "Veritas" in tonight's "Post is quite misleading. It is untrue that in appointments to chairs in the colleges the qualifications of our own graduates for the positions are overlooked. In the making of such appointments it is of the utmost importance that the appointees should be experts of the highest qualifications obtainable. The requirements are not merely for coaches to help students to get through the examinations for degrees. It is of the utmost importance that the holders of such positions should be competent to give the best training to students in their particular subjects and to inculcate the highest ideals attainable. In many subjects they are expected to engage in special researches.
All vacancies are specially adveirtised in all suitable places, including our own Dominion, and any local person may apply for the position advertised, and the qualifications of any local candidate are carefully considered. As a matter of fact many of the most important positions in our Wellington University College are at present filled by New Zealand graduates, and they are by no means, the least efficient of the staff. —I am, etc.,
