REPRESENTATIVE PLAY

SECOND DIVISION MEN

GENERAL TOPICS

The senior second division representative side which played the Wairarapa B representatives at Masterton on Saturday gave a very good exhibition, but the forwards showed weakness in the circle, and all the Wellington backs were inclined to be slow in tackling. During the first spell the attack was not varied enough, and many times it would have been advantageous if the left had been fed more. Alexander at left wing was fairly fast, but rather inclined to lose his position. Thompson, in the back line, tackled nicely and combined well with the centre forward. Jenkins gave a good exhibition, and he and Stevenson brought ofl: some nice short passing movements. Lyell found the ground too rough, and as a result was unable to get ball control. Coombe, at right half, was very willing, and always on the ball, and Double, for the first time at left half, gave* quite a good display and improved during the second spell. The two full-backs, Banks and Dixon, were rather slow in deciding who should go forward to stop an attack, but apart from that gave a good showing. The captain of the team, Newcombe, played well, but in having to mark the fast Wairarapa centre-for-ward, Ruatakere, did not cover up the left quite as much as he should have done. Beresford, in goal, made one mistake early in the match, but redeemed himself by judicious saves later on.
