WIDOWS' ALLOWANCES
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —Could y m ou please inform me through your informative-columns, the maximum income per week that is al-. lowed to a widow with one child, receiving a pension for herselt and the child, under the Social Security scheme? That is the maximum amount per week, including the pension. Also in view of the requests which are being made for citizens to take paying guests during the period of the Centennial Exhibition, will the regulations governing the maximum amount of such weekly incomes be waived, thereby permitting citizens to assist both the Exhibition and themselves? If the regulations are not waived during the period mentioned, will any penalty be incurred, such as being made to wait for a stated time, if the pension is forgone for the Exhibition period and
paying guests taken in lieu of it? —I am, etc., INTERESTED. [The allowable income for a widow with one dependent child is 30s weekly, and providing the income from all sources is not in excess of this amount no deduction in the full benefit is made. There is no provision under the new legislation whereby the Social Security Commission could allow a widow to exceed the limit of income and benefit permitted, so that if during the Centennial Exhibition any widow takes in paying guests and the income from this source is excessive, the benefit will require to be reviewed. However, if the grant is actually cancelled during the period the income is excessive, the benefit could be reinstated immediately the income is within the limits stipulated.]
