A QUIET MORNING
GALLOPS AT AWAPUNI
(Special to the "Evening Post.")
PALMERSTON N., This Day
There was little fast work at Awapuni yesterday for the weather was bleak and the going was greasy after heavy rain overnight. The course proper was open, but few serious gallops were attempted.
Disdain. Laughing Lass, The Bigot and La Bru were allowed to run along, but without being after time. Hanover was held to even time over* six furlongs, and Riotous and Bridegroom were given a working gallop over seven furlongs.
Among those out in the oval were Power Chief, Old Surrey, Great Legion (who has grown into a fine big horse), Vascones, and Girl Pat. The Winter Cup candidate, Catalogue hit out well over half a mile, which he covered in 56sec.
Evening Glow and Patahi finished strongly over the last half-mile of a five-furlong taskin*s.73-ssec, and Onahau was not doing badly to- run the last three furlongs in 42 3-ssec. Laughing Chief covered half a mile in 57sec, and Pit Mark went particularly well in the going to run three furlongs in better than 41sec. Quadroon sprinted down the back stretch with Moradabad, and they did well to cover two furlongs in 27sec. They were being slowed up as they came to the home turn, and took 42 3-ssec for the three furlongs. ' Manawatu is back in Mrs. A. W. McDonald's stable, and another recent arrival is Earl Colossus, who is to be prepared for hurdle racing. I. Rohloff will be riding at Hastings on Saturday, having been engaged for Birkology and Master Turbine. W. J. Broughton will be in attendance also, and one of his mounts will be Arabic.
