MASS MIGRATION
BACK TO THE REICH
GERMANS IN SOUTHERN
TYROL
(Received July 6, 9.30 a.m.)
BERLIN,. July 5.
Officials describe the repatriation of 300,000 former German and Austrian citizens from the Tyrol as "the biggest mass migration for centuries."
It is understood that the step was thought desirable because of the existing friction between Germans and Italians throughout the area. Tens of thousands of Czechs are also being moved to production centres in Germany, where the?/; is a shortage of skilled labour. Attempts are also being made to bring back to Germany minority groups from Hungary and Rumania.
It is estimated in Berlin that 6000 Germans in the South Tyrol have already crossed to Germany.
