In the first round of the British open golf championship at St. Andrews the players had to contend with a thunderstorm and lightning and with sodden greens. The leaders are:
G. Faulkner, J. Busson, R. Burton, and A. D. Locke (South Africa), 70; R. A. Whitcombe, W. H. Davies, A. Perry, V. Fallon, M. Pose, and D. J. Rees. 71; L. G. Crawley, W. J. Branch, C. Shankland, B. Ayton, and J. Bruen, 72; A. J. Lacey, 73.
Others include: H. Cotton, 74; Mitchell and C. A. Whitcombe, 75; Compston, 76; Ballieu (Australia) and Kyle, 77; Lawson Little and McLean, 79..
The holder of the title, Reg. Whitcombe. set a St. Andrews record with six successive 3's from the eighth to the thirteenth. Four of them were birdiec.
