A BAD CROSSING

AWATEA IN TASMAN

CAPTAIN DAVEY'S WORST

TERRIFIC SEAS

(By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright.)

(Received July 6, 11.10 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day

A severe storm which is still raging in the Tasman was described by the State Meteorologist as one of the most severe and extensive for many years.

Wireless reports from vessels in the Tasman told of mountainous seas and winds of more than gale force. The Awatea, which was originally due at 8 o'clock this morning, is not expected now until 4 o'clock this afternoon.

Speaking by radiophone, Captain Davey said: "It is the worst crossing from Auckland to Sydney that 1 have ever made, and the longest the Awatea has made. The seas have been terrific, with spray breaking over the bridge, but we came through without a £>ieee of broken glass."

For the comfort of the passengers, the Awatea was slowed down to 16-J knots.
