NEED FOR SPEED-UP
AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE
INTERNATIONAL DANGER
CANBERRA, July 5,
At today's meeting of the Commonwealth Defence Council, the Minister of Defence, Mr. G. A. Street, urged on the Government the need for immediate acceleration of the more vital provisions of the three-year defence programme.
The council discussed the delay in obtaining Parliamentary sanction for raising the permanent mobile force to 7500, as recommended by the Inspec-tor-General of the Military Forces, Lieutenant-General Squires. Stress was laid on the gravity of the international situation and the importance attached by Lieutenant - General Squires to the value of a mobile force.
The council will continue its meeting tomorrow.
