MANAWATU SETTLERS
SERIOUS FLOOD LIKELY
FIGHT AGAINST RIVER
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
PALMERSTON N., This Day.
Nine thousand acres in the Koputaroa district^ are menaced by erosion caused by the Manawatu River, which is in a flooded state after heavy rain. Settlers have been working day and night for several days to prevent the stop-bank from breaking, using logs and debris.
It is feared that a disastrous inundation will occur unless major remedial steps are taken. The river level is stationary now.
The Manawatu-Oroua River Board today passed a resolution requesting the Minjster of Public Works to take immediate steps. Some months, ago the Minister, when approached, stated that he would have a comprehensive report prepared for the River Control Board. Members said that they were still awaiting the outcome of this.
