RESCUERS RISK GAS

Fire in a seam 800 yards below the surface of the Astley Green colliery, Lancashire, caused the loss of five lives, including the manager. It is believed that three of the victims were cut off and the others died in attempting to save them. ! Rescuers risked being gassed in retrieving several injured men. A i thousand men who were in the mine were sent to the surface. The area affected was eventually sealed to avoid further loss of life.
