COUNCIL MEETING

QUEENSLAND SHIELD

The council of the New .Zealand Amateur Athletic Association met last night, the president (Mr. R. W. McVilly) presiding.

i The Hawke's Bay-Poverty Bay j centre asked the council to reconsider i its recent decision awarding the Can^ j terbury centre the Queensland Jubilee Commemoration Shield with 10.points as against nine to the Hawke's BayPoverty Bay centre. The request -was based on the council's refusal to grant three points for P. F. Sharpley's performances in the final of the 120 yds hurdles and in his heat of the 220 yds hurdles at the national championship meeting, on the ground that no applications for records were submitted to the council for these performances. The centre submitted, firstly, that by the two performances Sharpley merely equalled the then New Zealand 1 records which he himself held, and that any applications for such as records would be quite out of order, because a record was defined definitely as. '"the establishment of a performance which eclipses the previous best." In the second place it was submitted that as in the 220 yards hurdles final Sharpley went one better and created a new New Zealand record (duly applied for and granted by the council), the lesser performance of equalling the record in the heat merged in the greater performance, that of creating a New Zealand record in the final, and accordingly an application for a record for the lesser performance s was an absurdity. The centre suggested that particularly in regard to the 220 yds hurdles performance the council should not penalise the centre for not doing something that the association's rules did not permit being done. The centre contended also that a new method of scoring points sliould be adopted ■ and suggested the following:—New records, 4 points; existing records, 3 points; other points to be allotted as at present. Mr. H. McCormick said that Hawke's Bay's argument defeated itself. In addition, he pointed out that some time ago the centre had had no compunction about applying for recognition of a time by W. J. Fitzsimmons as equalling performances standing to the credit of a number of other sprinters. The council took the view that there was no good and sufficient reason for altering its award of the shield to Canterbury-CKOSS-COUNTKY CHAMPIONSHIP. The date for the New Zealand crosscountry championship this year at Hastings was fixed for August 12. The Winton Amateur Athletic Club, Dargaville Amateur Athletic Club, Presbyterian Harrier Club (Canterbury), and the Rover/ Scout Harrier Club (Canterbury) were granted affiliation L. R. Shields (Oamaru) and J. J. McMath (Southland) were reinstated las amateurs. j The following applications for records were approved:—Women's high jump. Miss E. M. Forbes. sft T 3-Sin; junior javelin, G. C Wood. 152 ft OMn; 120 yds junior hurdles. J. V. Devci^h, 5 5 4-ssec; junior broad lump. N. W, Thorn. 20ft- Bin: iunior hitjh iump. R. E.
