TIVOLI THEATRE.
Two Fine Films Coming,
Conquering where kings, emperors, and Pharaohs had failed, Ferdinand de Lesseps created the Suez Canal—the waterway that today has become the jugular vein of the world. The ddea of a short water route to the empires of the East has long captivated men's imaginations. Columbus. Magellan, Vasco da Gama, and the explorer heroes of history sought such a route in vain. But de Lesseps dreamed of tearing Africa and Asia apart to join the Mediterranean with the Ked Sea that ships might sail the desert to the Levant. Driven by the love of two women, de Lesseps realised his mag- j nificent dream despite the most discouraging obstacles a man ever faced. Such is the story of "Suez," the 20th Century-Fox spectacular drama, which opens on Tuesday at the Tivoli Theatre. Tyrone Power, Loretta Ypung, and Annabella share top honours in' the film. The equality of women gets better than an even break in "My Dear Miss Aldrich,"' the amusing comedy which will be the associate film. With Edna May Oliver, Maureen O'Sullivan. and' Walter Pidgeon top-! ping a first-rate cast, this picture ranks' as one of the better laugh films of J the age. It tells the story of a school j teacher who inherits a newspaper. The managing editor, strong in the belief that no woman is fitted for work beyond the home, attempts to block her at every turn until, of course, he falls in love with her. Edna May Oliver appears as a puzzle addict, in the most humorous role of her brilliant career. J. Farrell Mac Donald, the veteran character actor, is a city editor. Janet Beecher is a militant feminist. Others in the cast are Rita Johnson, Roger Converse, Brent Sargent, Charles Waldron, Guinn Williams, and Paul Harvey. ■
