PONEKE AND PETONE
Speed and solid forward play characterised) the match between Poneke and Petone, at] Petone. The teams were very evenly matched,, and the result was in doubt until the whistle! blew.
When the game started the Poneke backs appeared to have tho upper hand, and Petone were slow in getting under way. Play centred about the Petone twenty-five. Nevertheless, Petone were the first to score via a penalty by McGurk. The Poneke backs broke through at last, however, and piled up seven points by way of a field goal by Hatchard and a try by Potaka. Injuries took heavy toll of Poneke, however, and the attack went to the home team.
Two quick tries by McKnight and Rowe, both converted by McGurk, put Petone six points ahead early in the second half. Calcinal and Potaka scored unconverted tries for Poneke, and McGurk kicked another penalty, for Petone. The game ended: Pctone IG, Poneke 13.
