RACING AT OTAKI

WINTER MEETING

HELD IN PERFECT WEATHER

(By "Binocular.")

, The Otaki Racing Club's first winter meeting was held today in perfect weather, the state of the track being reminiscent of the conditions that ruled throughout the summer rather than of those usually offering m winter. An excellent sole of grass, however, took the jar out of the ground. There was a large attendance of racing enthusiasts, and,, with an eight-race programme being presented, a busy day faced the officials conducting the meeting. W. J. McDowell, rider of Strolling in the first race, broke his left collarbone, . .the second occurrence in recent weeks. Results: — TARARUA HACK HURDLE HANDICAP. £130; second horse £20, and third £10 from the stake; 1£ miles. 4 J." A. Betts's'br g Primak, by Acre —Lady Lucille, 6yrs, 9.0 (P. Burgess) • 1 5 G. W. New's b g All Blood, by Psychology — Bloodshed, aged, / 9.0 (J. Chapman) , 2 3 C. Watkins's b g Taumau, by Royal Divorce —Khassia, aged, car. 10.0 (W. E. Pine) 3 Won by four lengths, with five :■ lengths between second and third. Time, 2min ,54 2-ssec. ■ (Winner trained by E. Burgess. Trentham). Also started: 1 Conveyer 10.4 (A. . McDonald), 2 Strolling 9.6 (W. J. McDowell), 6 Sunder 9.0 (A. Sager), 7 Gascon car. 9.9J (R. Home). ONE FOR TRENTHAM. In a field of seven runners, Conveyer was made favourite in the Tararua Hack Hurdles, but the topweight never threatened danger at any stage of the journey, and could only finish fourth nine lengths behind the winner. Primak, ridden a very competent race by P. Burgess, went out to make the pace, and held charge throughout. All Blood and Taumau were his nearest attendants .throughout, but the Trentham representative drew away in the run home to beat All Blood by four lengths, with Taumau an even larger margin further away.. After dropping back on the turn, Conveyer came again to beat Sunder narrowly for fourth place. Strolling fell at the first fence. HUIA HANDICAP, £200; second horse £30 and third £20 from the stake: 7 furlongs. 1 L. H. Collinson'sb g Old Surrey, by Hunting Song—Martulla, 5 yrs, 7.9 (Hi N. Wiggins) ' 1 3 M. Williams's eh- g Export, by ' Lackham —Spain, aged, 8.7 (P. Williams) 2 6 G. F. Moore's br g Lord Cavendish, by Beau Pere—Lady ■ Cavendish, 3yrs, 7.6 (A. Foster) 3 A length each way. Time, lmin 26 l-ssec. (Winner trained by A. Wl'McDonald, Awapuni.) Also started: 2 Lady Montana 9.0 (A. Midwood), 4 Aureus car. 7.9 (B. Stowe), 7 War Lap car. 7.5 (S. Edwards), 10 Beau Gallante car. 7.12 (M. •Hartley), 5 Silver River.-7.2 (H. Challender), 9 Rotoma 7.0 (H.--.P.-Stewart), 8 Ruling Spi 7.0 (K. Chote>. Old' Surrey, favourite r for."the Huia Handicap/ began smartly in ''company with War Lap and Export. The lastnamed, however, lost his position in the next furlong and Aureus ran up to join the leaders, the trio carrying on right across the top. Three furlongs from home Old Surrey was holding a slight advantage over Aureus and War Lap, with Lord Cavendish and Silver River looming up. Once straightened up for home Old Surrey drew clear, but he had to be .kept going to hold off Export in the run home. Lord Cavendish, after promising to be dangerous half-way home, weakened slightly and retreated to third berth a similar distance back. Lady Montana, on the other hand, -came solidly at the finish just in time to beat Silver River for fourth place. War Lap weakened, as did Aureus, and Rotoma and Ruling Spi were never dangerous. ' RAUKAWA HANDICAP, £300, second horse £50 and third £30 from the stake: li miles. 4 Mr. N. Clout's eh g Meamea, by Lackham—Hinawehi, BJ2, syrs (B. H. Morris) 1 2 A. E. Glading's b m Sergia, by Lord Quex —Sunny Hours, car. 7.12, 6yrs (W. Jenkins) 2 1 J. O'Brien's b h Galteemore, by Martarma—Lady Colossus, 8.2, syrs (H.-N. Wiggins) 3 A neck each way. Time, 2min 8 2-5 sec. Also started: 3 Siegmund, 9.0 (G. R. Tattersall), 5 Rustem, car. 7.10 (S. Wilson), 6 Good Sun, 7.2 (R. Hitchen). (Winner trained by M. Williams. Otaki.) ■ Although the Raukawa Handicap was restricted to six runners, it was a: good race with an exciting finish, the locally-trained Meamea showing distinct promise as a future handieapper by finishing strongly to beat Sergia and Galteemore. From an excellent dispatch Sergia was the first to show up, but Galteemore almost immediately took over. However, he was kept under restraint, and he and Sergia made the pace the whole distance. Meamea was handily placed, and when they turned into the straight he loomed up on the outside of the leaders, finishing, the strongest to take the honours from the northerner Sergia. Galteemore, the favourite, was a very. creditable third, and then came Rustem, who covered considerably extra ground in the race. Neither Siegmund nor Good Sun reached the firing line at any stage. KUKU MAIDEN FLAT RACE (First Division), £80; second horse £10 and third £5 from the stake; 6 furlongs. 2 W. Morrison's br m Maturity, by Nigger Minstrel —Molong, 4yrs, 8.10 (A. Jenkins) 1 1 B. P. H. Brewer's eh f Yed Prior, by Surveyor—Lady Comet, 3yrs, 8.10 (G. R. Tattersall) 2 9 J. and D. Mansfield's b g Peach King, by Peach Brandy— Hallowvonia, 4yrs, 8.10 (K. Chote) 3 Won by a length and a half; second a length away. Time, lmin 15 3-5 sec. (Winner trained by Owner, Opaki.) Also started: 10 Charmante 8.10 (B. H. Morris), 7 Golden Memory 8.10 (J. Nicholson), 6 Haupongi 8.10 (P. Burgess), 3 Royal Lassie 8.10 (S. Wilson), • 5 Speedfast 8.10 (H. N. Wiggins), 4 Gothic 8.0 (W. Jenkins), 8 Te Maari 8.0 (W. J. Stevens). Favourite for the first division of the Kuku Maiden, Yed Prior had every chance, being handy' to the pacemaker. Peach King, throughout, and she had the leader beaten at the distance. However, the Surveyor mare could not withstand the finishing run of Maturity, who lay fourth practically throughout the running. Peach King showed plenty of early speed, but he failed to run on, as did Haupongi. However, the latter, ran a very creditable race lor a 1 resk horse. Te Maari threaten-

Ed danger at the top oi the straight, but could not go on with it, although she held off Gothic in the run home.'
