SUCCESSFUL YEAR

The annual meeting of the Low"er Hutt Civic Band was presided over by the president, Mr. J. W. Andrews. The visitors included Mr. and Mrs. E. P Hay, Mr. and Mrs. J.Mitchell, Mr. and Mrs. A. Marshall, Mr. J. E. F. Vogel, Mr. W. E. Gregory, Dr. and Mrs. B. J. Dudley, Mr. and Mrs. Jackson, and Mr. Hull-Brown. ! The report stated that the band had a very successful year. The number of engagements exceeded those of the previous year and performances had been given to institutions and organisations interested in charitable objects. Under arrangement with the council the band had given 12 outdoor performances in various parts of the borough, The past year was memorable in the history of the1 band because it competed for the first time in a contest, and although not successful in gaining honours at Christchutch, it Obtained a very fair report from the adjudicator and* in many respects Sc'o;uitte'd itself with credit, Reference was made to the late conductor, Mr, Ward, and to the excellent and zealous service rendered during his term of office. Appreciation was also expressed of the services of the acting conductor, Mr. Richards, who had recently taken control. ;

The Mayor, Mr. J. W. Andrews, congratulated the band on its year's work and on -its standard of play. Being an old bandsman himself, he took a keen interest in its achievements. He appreciated the enthusiasm of the members, and in his capacity of Mayor expressed the thanks of residents for the assistance that the band had given to charitable objects. He thanked all those who had assisted the band financially. An instance of the high esteem in which it was held could be judged from the fact that in a few days the public subscribed over £150 to meet the full cost of the band's attendance at Christchurch. - •

Mr. E. P. Hay, chairman of the council's committee in control of the band, considered that one of its most commendable objects Avas that of public service and the support of the public indicated that they fully appreciated those services.

Reference was made to the death of Mrs. Riddiford, the Rev. Mr. Harding, and Mrs. F. Stead.

Trophies were presented by Mrs. Andrews to Messrs. L. P. Robert, W. Moore, and F. Tarrant.

Supper was provided by the ladies and the band played several items which were much appreciated. The, following officers were elected: Patron, Mr. D.1 A. Ewen; president, Mr. J. W. Watkins, H. G. Teagle, W. Smith, W. N. Smith, D. G. Fraser, G. McNamara, F. Cambell, J. Minehan, E. Hutt, D. Godfrey, and H. M. Hayward; bandmaster, Mr.. J. McGrath; drum-major, Mr. J. Dunnett; sergeant, Mr. C. Griffin; corporal, Mr. R. Clarke; lance-corporal, Mr. P. Winnie; librarian, Mr. Mark Wilson; secretary and treasurer, Mr. W.
