TITAHI WATER SUPPLY

A POLLUTED SPRING

ALTERNATIVE SUGGESTION

A thorough survey had been made of the surroundings of the spring at Titahi Bay. wrote the Medical Officer of Health (Dr. F. S. Maclean) to the Makara County Council's meeting today, and he suggested' the possibility of sinking a suitable well and providing a water tower elsewhere.

_ The terrace about 25ft above the spring supplying the present water had nine houses on it. of which five had septic tanks, some of the effluent from which ran into the soil. The other houses had merely soak holes for waste water, and their nightsoil was buried. There were ample reasons for the deterioration of the quality of the water during the last four years. The only way in which the purity of that supply could have been maintained was the prohibition of building over a considerable area above the spring. He had been informed that a shallow well on other property nearby had withstood the dry spell, and he suggested that there were possibiltiies in sinking a well for the Titahi supply, if the water were pumped to a tower. It would be necessary to choose the site of the well so as to avoid any likely pollution. He would be pleased to confer later on with the council.

The Health Department, said the chairman, Mr. E. Windley, apparently intended to take no further action in the matter.

It was decided to ask the Health Department if it had any further suggestions to make.

Councillor C. H. Phillips said that the road was in a shocking state, and was dangerous. The reason that the offer of the Public Works Department was turned down was that the council thought it seemed high. The road was only three miles long, and the price worked out at about £1000 a mile.

Councillor J. Purchas remarked that the council had spent a considerable sum on improving this road some years ago.

The chairman withdrew his motion and it was decided that he and the clerk interview the District Engineer.
