FIRE ON LINER PARIS
MINISTER TO INQUIRE
PREMATURE TO ATTRIBUTE IT TO ARSON

LE HAVRE, April 20.
The Minister of Merchant Marine, M. Chappedelaine, has arrived here for an inquiry into the fire on the liner Paris. Despite official reticence, the Press is unanimous in stating that the outbreak was attributable to a foreign Power. The newspapers pillory the watch kept by the authorities on ships in port, recalling that this is not an isolated case.
It is officially admitted that the Surete received a warning on April 15 that attempts were likely to be made to sabotage transatlantic liners. It was feared that the first blow would be directed against the Normandie, and the watch was trebled on this ship. The warning came from Nice, where a woman overheard a hotel conversation detailing plans to bomb liners.
It is stated that it is premature to attribute the disaster to arson.
Nine cases of art treasures which were on their way to the New York World Fair were removed. It is hoped to remove the remaining case containing five small sculptures.
