JOHNSTON'S HILL
SAVING IT FOR PUBLIC
The Wellington Beautifying Society's plan to have Johnston's Hill, a 66-acre bush-clad area in Karori, acquired as a scenic reserve and bird sanctuary was carried a step further last flight at the monthly meeting of the society, when it was decided to collaborate with the Karori Progressive Association with a view to holding a public meeting to raise the necessary funds to complete the purchase.
The present position is that the owner is willing to sell the property tfor reserve purposes for £2500. The City Council has promised to contribute £1250 and the Government £500 i from the Domains Vote. This leaves £750 to be found. Representations were made to the Centennial Council in support of a request for £500 towards creation of the reserve as a [Centennial memorial, but the request was declined in favour of the proposed motor camp at Miramar. The society therefore still requires to find £750. The Minister of Internal" Affairs (the iHon. W. E. Parry) and representative I citizens are to- be invited to attend the meeting. The president (Captain S. Holm) said there • was a danger that if the society did not take steps to raise the balance of the money, the council might not consider itself bound to find the promised £1250. It was agreed to start the fund with a donation of £10 from the society.
