BACK TO GERMANY?
U.S. AMBASSADOR
PERHAPS, IF HITLER'S REPLY
IS FAVOURABLE
(Received April 20, 2.30 p.m.)
NEW YORK, April 19,
The Washington correspondent of the United Press says that Britain's decision that her Ambassador to Berlin shall return is not expected to influence any immediate similar action by the United States. Mr. Hugh R. Wilson, who was withdrawn from Berlin, is still acting in a consultative capacity at the State Department.
Diplomatic quarters believe there will be no action regarding Mr. Wilson's return pending Herr Hitler's reply to President Roosevelt's appeal on April 23. It is believed that the President would be disposed to re-establish normal diplomatic relations with Germany if Herr Hitler's reply opens a way for negotiations.
