NEW COAST ROAD
GOOD PROGRESS
PLIIViiVIERTON-PAEKAKARIKI
Very good progress in the formation of the new Plimmerton-Paekakariki coastal road was reported by the secretary of the Plimmerton-Paekakariki deviation committee, Mr. James, Mclntosh, after an unofficial visit by some members of the committee during the weekend. Work on the last of a series of seawalls on the coastal section is now being undertaken and when that is finished, probably within four months, the work remaining to be done will consist of actual road surface formation in the sections not already completed—not a big job for the modern road-making plant now being used.
The design of the highway provides for several "bays" in the length between Pukerua Bay and the entry into Paekakariki. At each of these there will be space for parking cars.
Mr. Mclntosh stated that his committee had asked the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) to give approval to a proposal to have placed in a suitable spot in one of the "bays" a stone or plate appropriately inscribed recording the opening, the unveiling of which might form the principal function at the opening of this new highway.
The most suitable place, it was considered, would be at the "Iron Pot" seawall, half a mile or so from the southern end near Pukerua Bay. The curve in the seawall there, together with a large area of level land on the hillside of the road, would provide a parking area for many cars. It would also be a very suitable site for a tearoom. The establishment of such an amenity no doubt would appeal to many of those who realised the value of the coastal road to motorists, not only from the city, but from the north as well.
The "Iron Pot" takes its name from the fact that for many years a large iron boiler of the kind used for boiling down was left at that spot by whalers of many years ago. A plentiful supply of spring water is available nearby.
It is expected that this new marine drive will be ready by the end of the year.
