LINE IN ALLEN STREET

EXHIBITION TRAMS

SPEEDING-UP CIRCUIT

Application is to be made to the Public Works Department by the City Council for authority to lay a singla tram track in Allen Street. A condition is to be that the track is not used until after 5 p.m. on working days, and the proposal is to be incorporated in the Order in Council now being prepared for various tramway extensions for facilitating Exhibition traffic;

The Mayor (Mr. T. C. A. Hislop) said that when the matter was before the tramways committee the proposal was very carefully investigated. The committee did not like the idea -of making a tram track through the street but subsquently agreed to it provided that there was no tram traffic in the street before 5 p.m.. Very heavy tram traffic to Rongotai was anticipated during the Exhibition, and it was necessary that trams should be running on that route as frequently as possible. Trams coming back through the Haitaitai tunnel at present had, in order to get back on lo the correct lin. to go out again, to change across in Courtenay Place. That was a slow way of doing it and if there were a large number of trams it would impede other traffic. With a track in Allen Street the trams would be able to pass the IDe Luxe Theatre, swing into Wakefield Street, and go via Allen Street into Courtenay Place on the correct ; lines. Councillor P. M. Butler said it sounded all right, but had the matter been discussed with the traffic department? i The Mayor said that the City Engineer had been consulted and the department was agreeable^

In reply to Councillor W. Duncan, the Mayor said that the work of laying the new track would be done outside ordinary working hours.
