APOLOGY TO GERMANY
SOUTH AFRICAN PREMIER
HERR HITLER SLIGHTED
(Received April 19, 11.30 a.m.)
CAPE TOWN, April 18
The Premier, General Hertzog, stated that the Government had officially apologised to Germany for uncomplimentary references made concerning Herr Hitler by the Mayor of Port Elizabeth at a meeting held to raise funds for refugees.
He added that legislation is to be introduced shortly to guard against the disturbance of relations with other States by making such attacks punishable.
The Premier admitted that the Government had not asked for a German apology for vicious German newspaper attacks on General Smuts, Minister of Justice.
Colonel Charles Stallard, Leader of the Dominion Party, has placed his party at the Government's disposal in the event of a crisis.
