UNSKILLED MEN

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—As a young New Zealander who, like many others, was not able to learn a trade or even get work of any description .owing to the depression, I would like to know why we have to remain labourers while men are being brought from overseas? There are many like myself who are good workers and are willing to learn all we can, but the only satisfaction we get is, we are too old. This is one of the reasons why there are so many unskilled men in this country.

I also ask you, Sir, how can a labourer employed on public works or in the Railways ever be expected to marry on the wages he receives when house rent takes almost half. It is not our fault we are labourers and most of us are willing to do our best; but I do think we should at least be given a trial before men are imported.—l am, etc.

ALIAS JONNY.
