AJAX PAYS BETTER ODDS

(From "Vedette.")

SYDNEY, April 14,

Ajax put himself back on the pedestal by winning the All-Aged Plate all the way at Randwick on Wednesday and running the mile in lmin 35fsec. Gold Rod and King's Head chased him fo-' seven furlongs, and it was left to St. Constant to run into second place.

Doubts about Ajax's condition caused early bettors to .secure wagers not at odds-on, and the champion started at his best price for many months. He won well but hardly as convincingly as Ajax at his best, despite the -fast time, which was only a quarter of a second outside the record.

Mildura and Spear Chief added to the Price-McCarten record at Randwick On Wednesday, Spear Chief winning the Cumberland Plate easily and Mildura defeating a poor field in the Bronte Handicap.
