VELDETTE IS PROMISING

Veldette, who won the Juvenile Handicap at Stratford on Saturday, is an interesting filly, as.she comes from the same branch of the Moonshine family as the brilliant Crown Area, to whom her dam is a half-sister. She raced earlier in the year at Egmont and Wanganui, when she impressed as one who might develop good class, and ( her success came at her fifth, appearance. Veldette is a well-made bay filly by Vaals from Golden Rod, who was by Diacquenod from Moorfield, the dam of Grown Area, Moorgas-, and Plateau, all good performers. The foundation mare of the family, Moonshine, a daughter of The Libel (sire also of Traducer), was imported to New Zealand back in 1858, and from her have descended such excellent horses as Mitrailleuse, Nestor, Chortle, Many Colours, Good Sport, Hunting Day. and Tosh. Another branch of the same family that came to New Zealand is that established by Petroleuse, who got Hotchkiss and is ancestress of General Latour, King Lv, and others. Moorfield consistently produced colts among her living progeny till Golden Rod survived as the first of her trnree fillies to be safely foaled. Golden Rod was not raced but was put to the stud by her breeder, Mr. A. Appleyard, of Hawera and Veldette, who is her first progeny, is being raced by her breeder. It-would not surprise if this SHy turned out a three-year-old of particular merit.
