PEACE, JUSTICE, AND
CHARITY
LEAD OF THE CHURCH
EASTER HOMILY

VATICAN CITY, April 9. "There can be no peace whilfl pacts which were solemnly sane* tioned lose that security and value which constitute the foundation of reciprocal trust, and without which the moral and material disarmament so highly desired becomes daily less attainable," declared the Pope in an Easter homily. He added that tranquillity and prdet are impossible when sons of the same country are divided by ardent political and other differences and when so many people lack work sufficient for their sustenance. This makes them, an easy prey to subversive doctrines.
Religion, he said, was a remedy for the world's ills. While there could not be peace without ( order, there could not be order without justice. This demanded obedience to legitimate authority and respect for human liberty and dignity. He insisted that wealth should be equitably distributed. Justice required the saving work of the Church, and should not be obstructed, because the Church remained the mistress of truth and the spring of spiritual life.
. Heal peace, l.c said, was impossible while there was lacking among the nations mutual understanding, which, alone encouraged people to follow the lighted path of civilised progress. The world was agitated by an atmosphere of anxiety which created fear of worse days.
He concluded with an appeal to individuals, peoples, and Governments for peace, justice, and charity.
