RIVERS VERY LOW

EFFECT OF DROUGHT

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

WANGANUI, April 8.

The effect of the prolonged drought is plainly evident on the Wanganui River. Steamers are maintaining the service to up-river settlements only with difficulty. The upper reaches are showing the lowest level for 30 years.

In the Rangitikei River the flow is reported to be the lowest on record.

The Mangawhera Falls, on the Wa-nganui-National Park highway, customarily a voluminous cataract, are now practically a trickle.
