OTAGO WINS IN SWIMMING

DUNEDIN, April 9.

The thirty-fifth annual New Zealand inter-university college tournament which is being held in Dunedin till Tuesday began yesterday, when lawn tennis, swimming, rowing, and athletic competitions were held.

The preliminaries of the lawn tennis and swimming were held in the morniing at Logan Park and the Municipal [Baths respectively, the finals of the swimming being decided in the evening. The rowing eights, won by Otago jby three feet from Canterbury, with Victoria College third, and Auckland 'fourth, was decided over a course from |Macandrew Bay to Victoria Wharf in the mox-ning. In the afternoon the athletic championships, probably the most important. contest of the series, were begun at the university oval. This evening a special service was held at First Church and later the visiting teams and delegates were accorded a reception at Knox College. Tomorrow's programme will include boxing in the morning and evening at the Town Hall, basketball at the Union' courts, and the finals of the athletic championships at Logan Park. The finals of the lawn tennis will be played on Tuesday and the rifle shooting section will be held on the Pelichet Bay range.
