The death has occurred of Commissioner Hugh Whatmore, of the Salvation Army.

Commissioner Hugh Whatmore was a well-known leader of the Salvation Army and served for 48 years in that organisation. As a young officer he received his first appointment outside the United Kingdom when he was sent to Sweden at short notice. Later he served in Norway, the United States, Italy, and Holland. In the last-men-tioned country he was territorial leader during the war. One of his most important journeys was as representative of General Bramwell Booth to the Far East, Ceylon, India, and Netherlands India. In 1921 he was appointed territorial leader in Australia and remained there until his retirement in 1930.
