SUMMARY OF WAR DATES
The following is a short list of prinsipal dates in connection with the war in Spain:— 1936. July lb.—Revolt breaks out at Melilla, in Spanish Morocco. July 19.—Risings in various parts of Spain, mutinies in the Balearics and Canary Islands. Rebels gain control of Seville. August 18.—Rebels take Badajoz. September 4. —Rebels occupy Irun. September 28.—Rebels capture Toledo and relieve Alcazar garrison. October I.—General Franco becomes Chief of State and Commander-in-Chief of the rebel army. October 21.—Siege of Madrid begins. 1937. February B.—Malaga captured by rebels. March 18.—Italians routed at Guadalajara. October 22.—Gijon falls, the siege of Oviedo is raised, and Franco gains complete control of the north of Spain. December.—Franco abandons his drive on Madrid. December 19.—Loyalist offensive at Teruel. 1938. March 9.—Franco begins his Aragon offensive to the sea. April 15. —Rebel forces reach the sea, severing Catalonia from other loyalist territory. July 27.—Loyalists launch a surprise attack across the Ebro. December 23.—Franco ftnal offensive 4n Catalonia begins. 1939. January 26.—Fa1l of Barcelona. December 28.—President Azana resigns. March 6.—Madrid Government overthrown: Revolt in the city. March 28. —Madrid surrenders.
