HUTT VALLEY CARNIVAL.

Opening Saturday Next,

The carnival to be held at the Hutt Recreation Ground will be officially opened on Saturday afternoon by the Hon. W. Nash at 2.45 o'clock. The carnival has been organised for the purpose of raising the Hutt Valley's quota towards the cost of the Wellington Provincial Centennial Memorial, which is to be erected at Petone Beach on the spot where the first settlers landed one hundred years ago. Festivities will open with a monster procession that has been organised to demonstrate the remarkable industrial progress of the district. The leading manufacturers and business firms will be represented with decorated floats; even the Chinese have entered a decorated float. Many of these floats have been modelled on designs used in the recent sesquicentennial procession in Sydney. The carnival queens, with their attendants, will also participate in the procession, which is expected to reach over a mile in length. The procession will commence from Buick Street. Petone, at 1.30 p.m.. and will proceed to the Hutt Recreation Ground. It will be followed by athletic sports, commencing at 2.30 p.m. The main feature will be a ten-mile cycle race. In the evening there will be high carnival —variegated illuminations, displays by the Lower Hutt Municipal Band and the Petone and Upper Hutt Fire Brigades, an exhibition of Highland dancing by the Misses Ford, and public dancing of the Lambeth Walk on the green. The carnival will be in full swing with nightly changes of programme from next Saturday until Monday night, April 10.
