A MAYOR'S REGRET

LETTER TO CZECH CONSUL

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

AUCKLAND, March 29

"I am sure the community shares the regret I feel at having to take leave officially of you as Consul for Czechoslovakia in New Zealand," stated a letter from the Mayor of Auckland, Sir Ernest Davis, addressed to Mr. R. M. "If I may say so," the Mayor added, "you have upheld your office with dignity and distinction and one cannot escape the conclusion that the circumstances responsible for the closing of the consulate here are repugnant to residents of a British democracy. "To me, as no doubt to other Aucklanders, it is extraordinary that repercussions of European developments should be felt in this manner in faraway New Zealand. It forces one to ponder deeply on the causes and to sympathise wholeheartedly with smaller nations who are victims of ruthless aggression."
