Party Last Night,

Pastel-coloured carnations in shades of mauve and pink were mingled with delphiniums to make a charming „ setting for Miss Marjorie Barton's evening party at her home in Penrose Street, Lower Hutt, last night. The party was given in. honour of Miss Ruth Gower, whose marriage to Mr. Clifford Carter will take place on April 22, and the guest of honour was the recipient of many, beautiful gifts. Table games and ingenious competitions were the order of the evening and after the battles of wit and chance supper was a welcome refreshment. Miss Barton was wearing a slim-fitting frock of white satin patterned in a multi-col-oured floral design. The guests included Mrs. Ralph Barton, Mrs. Rex Rose, Mrs. D. Orsborn, Mrs. Alan Sim, Mrs. J. Powdrell, Mrs. T. Raine, Mrs. Spencer Digby, and Misses Mary Mules, Vivienne Aldred, Gwyneth Abercrombie, Mary Chesney, Lois . Goldsmith, Marjorie -Gibbons, Betty and Nancy Olphert, Betty Jones, Bebe Thompson, and Beth and Joan Gibbons. A Studio Dance. The first dance of the season of the Royal Society of St. George was held in the Southern Colledge Studio. A large number of members and friends danced to a good orchestra, and much appreciated were violin solos by Miss Ethel Gibson, and musical monologues by Mr, Bordeaux. A popular item was "The Chestnut Tree," demonstrated by Mr. and Miss Thomson. The host and hostess for the evening were Mr. and Mrs. T. X.'Thompson and Mr. G. Rees was an efficient master of ceremonies. The committee comprised Mrs. S. Jeffrey, Miss Hoinville, Miss Wood, and Messrs. G. Rees, C. Lane, and J. Verity. "Cabin Tea." Miss June Bennett gave a "cabin tea" recently for Miss Tony McKenna prior to her leaving by the Awatea for six weeks' holidays in Sydney. Many useful presents were received by the guest of honour. Among those present were Mesdames Sloan, Exley, Scanlan, Scrimgeour, Brodie (Dunedin), Butland, McKenna; Misses T. Roath, J. Diggle, E. Gollie, J. Nesbit, J. Mason, and M. Pepperal. Welcome Home. Miss Valeric Beere, who returned to Wellington recently after several years spent abroad, was the guest of honour at an evening party given this week by her cousin, Mrs. R. C. Hayes, of Karori. Many of those present had been fellow-students at the Art School and an- interesting evening was spent in renewing old friendships. Mrs. Hayes, who wore a turquoise velvet coatee over a blue flowered taffeta frock, was assisted by Misses Adrienne and Joan Beere. Miss Valeric Beere wore a lacr quered satin tunic of Oriental colouring with a black skirt. Those present included Mrs. Myles Wright, Mrs..l Vernon Rowe, Mrs. Arnold Stewart; Misses Marjorie Anscombe, Kathleen Kempthorne, Noel Anderson, Valeric Cari% Mamie Williams, Audrey O'Brien, Clifford Hickson, Moira Robertson, Margurete Webb, Evelyn Goldsmith, Joyce May, Phyllis FitzGerald, and T. Major. Coming of Age Dance. A party was given recently at the Orange Hall, Petone, by Mr. and Mrs. R. Cox to celebrate the coming of age of Mr. Eric Cox, and a very enjoyable time was spent in dancing and games. Mrs. Cox was wearing a floral frock, and assisting her were Miss Mavis Cox, who wore lavender georgette, and Miss Grace Cox in pink net. The dance was held in the club pavilion, which was decorated in the club colours. An assortment of novelties added greatly to the fun and a gaiety prevailed throughout the evening. Johnson, B. Boyd, and A. Jordan. Farewell Parties For Traveller. Mrs. C. Stark, Kelburn, who-- will leave Wellington tomorrow for Auckland where she will join the Mariposa for the United States, en-route to England, has been guest of honour at many parties recently. Mrs. C. H. Wood, The Glen, Kelburn, was hostess at a musical evening, and many friends gathered to bid farewell to the guest of honour. Mrs. Ledger,' Brooklyn, gave a party at her home in Helen Street, and received her guests in the drawing-room, which was gay with late summer flowers. Mrs. Ledger wore a hostess gown of black georgette, and Mrs. Stark was in floral satin in fuchsia shades. Other hostesses for the traveller have been Mrs. J. Cunningham, Mrs. M. Bannister, Mrs. H. Trevethick, and her daughter, Mrs. Ulric Williams (Napier). Red Cross Garden Fete. Mrs. F. S. Pope occupied the chair at a recent meeting of the committee which is promoting the Red Cross garden fete which will be held at the Red Cross Home, 80 Hobson Street, on Saturday, April 1. Lady Myers will open the function which will be attended by the Port Nicholson and the Caledonian Pipe Band. Well-stocked stalls have been arranged and a baby show should prove an added attraction. The commandant of the Men's V.A.D. reported that a number of novel games and amusements had been secured and these would be available at the fete. A demonstration in firstaid will also be given. Feted at "Bon Voyage" Party. Another party was given for Miss Myfanwy Davies before she sailed by the Awatea on, Tuesday night for Australia. Miss Rere Beckway was .the hostess and the party took place at the University Women's Club, where representatives met to wish her "bon voyage." After afternoon tea had-been served the guest of honour opened many parcels. Musical items were given by Miss Myfanwy Davies, Miss I. Arthur, and Miss M. Griffin. Among those present were Mesdames Davies, Down, Nees, C. E. Corrigan, B. McKinlay, C. Ball, and Misses F. Gibson, C. Ford, F. Priestley, J. Ackinson, E. McElrea, D. Appleby. P. Gillespie, I.
