POINT HOWARD

WATER SUPPLY SCHEME

The Lower Hutt Borough Council agreed last evening to a proposal made by the Eastbourne Borough Council for a supply of water sufficient to enable the Eastbourne Council to supply the Point Howard area of the Hutt County.. Eastbourne at present has the right to a maximum, draw-off of 250,000 gal- ' lons per day from the reservoir on the ! Point Howard hill, supplied from Lower Hutt artesian wells. The Lower Hutt Council agreed last evening to increase the maximum draw-off to 300,000 gallons per day, which is considered sufficient margin for a supply for Point Howard residents. The price paid by Eastbourne is 7d per 1000 gallons, and it is understood that after paying for the cost of reticulation and administration, the cost to Point 'Howard residents will be 9d per 1000.

NEW ASSOCIATIONS

Advice of the formation of two new district surf life-saving associations was received at a recent meeting of the council of the New Zealand Surf Lifesaving Association. The result of the formation of the new bodies will be the closer co-ordination of hitherto isolated clubs. A letter from Mr. P. D. Home, of Waikino, stated that representatives of five clubs, Wainui and Waikanae (Gisborne), Waihi, Whakatane, and Mount Maunganui (Tauranga) met at Whakatane recently and decided unanimously on the formation of an East Coast surf life-saving association, to be affiliated directly to the New Zealand association. The clubs were previously affiliated to the Auckland association, but as they are in some cases hundreds of miles from Auckland considerable difficulty was met in their administration. Subsequent to the meeting, teams from the five clubs met in the first East Coast (North Island) surf life-saving championships. The new association has as its goal the co-ordination of the work of the clubs on the East Coast, all of whom are somewhat distant from any provincial centre, the fostering of interest in lifesaving work, and the formation of other clubs on East Coast beaches, and the stimulation of general interest in the principles of swimming and lifesaving. The letter requested information as to the correct procedure to be carried out. In reply, Mr. N. A. Ingram, general secretary of the New Zealand association, expressed pleasure in the formation of the new association. He did not anticipate any difficulty, as the Auckland association appreciated the difficulty of control from such-a distance. He advised the clubs first to make application to the Auckland association for permission to apply to the New Zealand body for affiliation as a new district association. On the receipt of this permission, application should be made, enclosing a copy of the proposed constitution. When accepted, this application would entitle the association to a direct representative on the council of the New Zealand association at Wellington. "Please accept my personal congratulations on the move made," added Mr. Ingram, "as it "has long been $elt that it would be desirable to have a district association operating there, and this has always been the objective of the Auckland association itself. There is no doubt that the Auckland association is deserving of great credit for its keen interest in clubs in your district, and the many visits paid by its bers on instructional tours, etc. The matter was held in abeyance at last night's meeting, pending Auck-. land's approval and the receipt of the constitution. „,,.,,.. * A letter from Mr. H. Eattray, of Greymouth, advised that *at a, recent meeting, delegates .of the Hokitika, Greymouth, and Westport clubs decided to form a district council under the name of the West Coast (South Island) District Surf Life-saving Association. He made formal application for. affiliation with the New Zealand body. . . ' The affiliation was approved subject to the submission of the constitution, the fees to date from next season. The matter of a representative was left over for the time being.
