AT EVANS BAY

KITTY WINS LADIES'

RACE

FIRST OUTBOARD CONTEST

Mrs. J. C. Bolland skippered Kitty to victory in the second women's race for the Royal St. Kilda Yacht- Club trophy, contested .in perfect sailing conditions at Evans Bay last Saturday. Under the efficient and able direction of her husband, Mrs. Bolland took Kitty into the lead right at the start and was never headed, finishing three minutes ahead of the second boat home, Stardust. Miss J. Hawthorne, at the tiller of Stardust, did exceedingly well but could do no more than fourth on her 1£ minute handicap. Miss C.. Rawnsley, sailing San Toy,

Damfino ll's regular forward hand, Miss Pat Kemp, did not do as well as might have been expected, but Phil set her a difficult task when he ejected to sail two up in a breeze which was a. little more than light.

John Payne, fisherman and erstwhile yachtsman, was the target for much criticism when he moored his fishing dory to one of the racing buoys in the ladies' race. Several of the lady skippers not too well experienced, in the art of gybing nearly swamped his boat, but the imperturable John was quite unconcerned. Anyway, he caught three schnapper.

A number of club members began painting operations with gusto on the clubhouse roof last Sunday and made good progress, but owing to the heat of the day and the absence of any liquid encouragement the gang slowly depleted in number as the day wore on. However, the work will be carried on this weekend. (All members please note.)

Ernie Hargreaves took Southern Maid to Paremata for the day last Sunday. It is obvious that he intends taking the Easter Regatta seriously this year, and we presume his little trip was made as a "feeler"— and to make certain that no new sandbanks have arisen.

Two keelers, Avalon and Kestrel, made a trip. over to the Sounds last weekend and although no details are to hand it is understood that' the jaunt was quite successful.

At a recent general meeting of the club, members truly lived up to their long-held reputation for soirited debating. As one enthusiastic member remarked afterwards, "It was great

sport."

. Last Saturday the Bay presented an animated scene when the initial race for outboard motor-boats was run. So far only three boats have made an appearance, but there is. a possibility of further entrants in the future. Results were a* follows:—Rainbow (W/ Maloas), 1; Miss X (A. Bower), 2; Beeiax (G. S. > Stevenson) was disciualified for not rounding a mark. The course used was from the starting line to the clubhouse to bathing sTaeds to slip buoy to clubhouse, thus giving spectators along the shore an excellent view of the whole race.

Next Monday night a talk on yachting in Wellington thirty yaers ago is to be given in the clubhouse, with the aid of lantern slides, supolied by Mr. T. B. Reynolds. The talk commences at 8 r>.m. and should ri^ove most enjoyable and of particular interest to old \members. Supper will' be provided. •
