i BEEF RISES AT AUCKLAND ] DROP AT ADDINGTON j A smaller yarding and consequent keener competition resulted in a sharp rise in values for ox beef at the Westfield stock sales yesterday. Prime medium and light -weights took part in an advance which equalled Is a 1001b. Cow beef was quoted unchanged. There was a steady demand for an average entry of sheep, quotations being for the most part unchanged though a slight fall occurred in some cases. Lambs in average numbers were quoted steadily, prime lambs making 17s 6d to 245, and others 5s to 15s. Good quality runners and vealers were in short supply in an average entry of calves and values for these showed an improvement on the depressed rates of last week. Values were fully firm for a small average entry of pigs, competition being steady throughout the sale. In the entry of fat cattle offered at the Burnside sale medium weights were in the majority. All classes of cattle showed a drop in values. There was a further easing by 10s a head for stores, good young steers making to £8 18s. Up to £9 was paid for-young cows in profit. The entry of fat sheep totalled 2157 head, a few trucks of prime wethers being included among a large number of ewes. At first, values were firm, but as the sale progressed, it became difficult to dispose of light and unfinished sorts. More than 1260 fat lambs were penned, a few butchers' sorts meeting with keen competition and the others selling to exporters fet full schedule rates. Best sorts made up to 295.
