JUNIOR TENNIS TOURNAMENT

One of the outstanding events of the sporting week, which is now being held in Wanganui, is the junior lawn tennis tournament, which commenced on Wednesday and will finish on Saturday, players coming from various parts of the Dominion for the occasion. Keen interest is being taken in the matches. A great deal of talent is displayed by these" young people, many showing considerable promise. A Celebration. An enjoyable evening was spent at Victoria Hall on Wednesday in celebration of the coming-of-age. of Miss Thelma Bergen. About 120 guests assembled for the occasion. Miss Bergen was wearing a becoming frock of pink lace over satin, with matching pink taffeta trimming, and a spray of pink carnations. She carried a beautiful posy of carnations and maidenhair i fern, presented by Miss Kathleen \ Bruce. Mrs. Bergen received the guests, gowned in black Hungarian silk,! patterned in mauve, with a flower ■ spray to match and a sash of black velvet. Dancing and music occupied the evening, card tables being provided.f of non-dancers. The programme included a trio by Miss D. Whiting (piano), Miss D. Clark (violin), and Mr. N. Fletcher (mouth-organ); a tenor solo by Mr. Alan Mentor; vocal duet by Misses. N. Chelley and J. Syme; recitations! by Miss S. Bates; arid a vocal duet by Messrs. C. Sheriff and F. Rule. Themusicians for the dancing were' Messrs. R. Walker and P. Jeffrey, and Miss J. Patterson. ! The supper tables were decorated in pink, the two-tier pink-iced birthday cake with 21 candles being made and iced by Mrs. Bergen. , ' Personals. Mrs. P. M. O'Neill, Ingestre Street, with her small son Patrick, left this week for Wellington for the races; Mrs. James Jack, Dunedin, accompanied by her two children, has been staying in Wanganui, where she has been entertained at several parties.' Mrs. Jack will be visiting New Plymouth later.

Mrs. Gill-Carey, formerly ofWanga^ nui,has been, on a very short-visit to New Zealand. She has been staying at Rotorua and also with her brother, Mr. Robert Earle, Somme Parade.. Mrs. Gill-Carey left by the Wanganella on Thursday for Sydney, and from there she will return to England.

Mr. and Mrs. T. Latham are visiting Mrs. Latham's grandparents, Sir James and Lady Allen, Arana, Dunedin.

Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Orton motored to Wellington for the races.

Mrs. F. W. Carey and Miss A. Carey, were recent visitors to Wellington.

Miss L. Parkes, who has been on holiday at Gore and Queenstown, has returned home.

Miss Beth Robbins, of the Auckland Hospital nursing staff, has'been on a short Visit to her parents, Mr.; and Mrs. D. R. Robbins, Koromiko Road.

Mrs. H. D. Bates and Mrs; S. Barton are visiting Wellington, for the races.

Mrs. C. M. Strouts and Miss June Strouts, Nelson Street, are' visiting Wellington.

Mr. and Mrs. G. C. Kiddle, of London, are at present in Wanganui, and are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Fisk, Jellicoe Street.

Mr. and Mrs. E: J: Williams and Miss Marian Williams, Brunswick, accompanied by Mrs.. Williams, Lenihan Street, motored to Auckland on Thursday. ■ . '

Mr. and Mrs. R. G. Davis, Koeke, and the Misses Nance and Cora Davis, were visitors for the wool sale on Thursday.

Mrs. Andrew Hogg, Boydfield Street, Wanganui East, is spending a holiday at Rongotea..

The Rev. and Mrs. J. S. Martin, Aramoho,,. are spending a holiday in New Plymouth.
