ANNIVERSARY DAY
HOLIDAY POSITION
This year, Anniversary Day, January 22, falls on a Sunday, and inquiries have been made regarding its observance. Anniversary Day does not come under the provisions of the Factories Act or the Shops and Offices Act, and is, accordingly, not a statutory holiday. It is customary for the day to be observed as a. holiday on the day of the week on which it falls, but this year it will generally be observed on Monday, January 23. Government offices, the banks, the Harbour Board, and the City Council are observing the holiday on the Monday, which is the third day of the Wellington .Racing Club's Summer Meeting at Trentham.
The construction of the holiday clause in certain awards will decide whether workers under those awards will receive a holiday/ In some awards provision is made for a holiday on Anniversary Day—the Sunday—but in others provision is made for a holiday on the day usually observed as Anniversary Day—this year on Monday.
