LUNCHEON FOR BLIND

CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION

A large and successful function took place in the Wellington Social Club for the Blind rooms," at the Red Cross, recently.

It was a Christmas luncheon tendered to the blind people in Wellington. Also present was a party of twenty of the inmates of the New Zealand Institute for the Blind, who were passing through this city on their annual vacation.

A willing band of lady helpers, under the capable management of Mrs. L. Vrede, the club«hostess, prepared a splendid luncheon to which 150 guests sat down. The helpers certainly charmingly decorated the hall and the table for the occasion, their brightness and the cheerful chatter of the blind people's voices making a very delightful scene.

Mrs. Knox Gilmer, president of the club, thanked all the helpers and congratulated them on their efforts. She also read' a number of greetings from various people, including one from the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage and the Hon. W. Parry.

Amongst those present was the Hon. P. Fraser, who gave a very interesting talk. Captain Galloway gave greetings and messages from the Red Cross Society. Messrs. J. Spence and Carnegie and Dr. J. Beaumont, all vicepresidents of the club, gave suitable messages. Mrs. Gordon brought a message from the Wellington Braille Club. Both Messrs. C. Lahogue and D. Ridley, the two blind men who started the club in 1935, gave suitable replies.
