WORK ON TUGS
COURT'S DECISION
Several matters in dispute regarding the hours worked by men on a tug at Lyttelton and the tug Toia at Wellington have been settled by a judgment issued for the Arbitration Court by Mr. J. A. Gilmour, S.M-
At Lyttelton provision is made for ah annual allowance for overtime worked and the Magistrate ruled that this provision made the general provisions for overtime on tugs and dredges inapplicable. - He suggested that the local disputes committee should consider some additional payment to the fireman on the Lyttelton tug to compensate him for his early start.
Mr. Gilmour ruled that the hour allowed for getting up steam on the Toia was a special provision to compensate the fireman for his early start and consequently the fireman must be paid for the minimum of four hours' working time on holidays in addition to the first hour worked before other hands commenced.
