BETTER WEATHER

ALUNGA AND ROYAL STAR

(By "Rangatira.")

The best weather for many weeks was enjoyed for the final galloping of Manawatu candidates at Trentham this morning. However, after the persistent rain of late the ordinary working tracks were not available, and the fast trials were done on the inside grass, the two-year-olds working inside the trestles and the older horses outside the trestles. The going on this track was unexpectedly good.

Several good performances were registered, among those to please being the Manawatu Cup candidates Galteemore, Peerless, and Siegmund, and the Fitzherbert Handicap aspirants Dungarvan and Royal Star 11. The best effort of the morning, however, was that of Alunga, who does not come in till the second day at Awapuni.

Galteemore (A. E. Bennet) and Peerless (W. Doyle) were sent a mile, and the former was in front throughout. After a slow initial furlong they ran the first half-mile in 53sec, by which time Galteemore had drawn three lengths ahead, and they came home the last half-mile in 51sec, with Peerless unable to close the gap at all till the final fifty yards, when she made up a length of the leeway. Galteemore bowled along very freely all the way. Siegmund (R. A. Hawkings) had Twenty Grand (S. G. Robinson) for a companion over seven furlongs, and he ran the pace set till the final bit, when he moved away to finish on strongly half a length in front. The full distance took lmin 31 3-ssec, and the last half-mile 51 3-ssec, with Siegmund appearing as if he could have done better. A BRILLIANT SIX. Dungarvan (Doyle) and Alunga (A. Foster) were associated over six furlongs, and both galloped brilliantly, with Alunga winning the, trial by a head in lmin 14 3-ssec, the last five furlongs in lmin 1 3-ssec, and the last half-mile in 49sec. Royal Star II (H. Bush), who galloped early in the morning, was with Debham (A. G. P. Newnham) till well into the straight, when he cleared out to finish four or five lengths ahead. Their time for five furlongs was lmin 2sec, with the last half-mile done in 49 3-ssec. Royal Star II is working better than he has ever done, and he appears to be still improving. Accomplice (Bush) had something in hand when readily beating Sigurd (G. Flood) by a length over seven furlongs in lmin 30 3-ssec, the last halfmile in 53sec. This mare should pick up some money during the holidays. Mister Quex (F. Power) made the pace and finished a couple of lengths ahead of Sunbeam (R. Hawes), who was doing his best work at the close, after running six furlongs in lmin 16, 3-ssec, the last half-mile in 51 4-ssec. HINERAWE PLEASES. Hinerawe (Bennet) hung on to hold Lustral (Foster) at bay by a neck, with. Roaming (Doyle) three lengths back, after six furlongs in lmin 18sec, the last half-mine in 52sec. Lustral's effort was a good one, as he was slow to begin. Roaming stopped after, forcing the pace, with Hinerawe. Mother-in-Law (Power) was several lengths too good for Coronado {Hawkings) over five furlongs in lmin ,4sec, the last half-mile in 51sec. Gaylord (P. Burgess) similarly beat Golden Hawk (A. Sagar) over half a mile.in, 51 2-5 sec. Bisect (Burgess) was half a length in front of Gay Hunting (D. Lamb), with Youssipof (Power) four lengths away, after half a mile in 49 4-ssec. Acrobat (Robinson/, under a hold, shaded Gothic (Hawkings) at the end of half a mile in 50 l-ssec. Cherokee (J. Nidholson) and Pharisee (Lamb) were doing only three parts pace over five furlongs, and so were Anita Foe and Sceptre. Happy Heels (Hawkings) was finishing on a head in front of Lady Lyric (Robinson) after running six furlongs in lmin 16 4-ssec, the last half-mile in 52sec. Drachma (Doyle) was a neck to the good of Daregain (Foster) after five furlongs in lmin 3sec, the last half-mile in 50sec. Floral Robe (Foster) just beat Trebor (Doyle) with T,ady Baron (Bennet), a, lazy worker, well back, after half a mile in 51 2-ssec. Floral Robe ran about a bit near the finish, otherwise she would have won .the trial more easily. Revival (Burgess) and Twilight Song (D. W. Bush) took 52 sec.

On the inside of the track Telamon (H. Bush) finished on well to beat the two-year-old Globe Trotter (Newnham) by a head over half a mile in 50 3-ssec, the maiden having the outside running. Beau Vite (Doyle) came home strongly to shade Counter Lunch (Bennet)i at the end of a similar trip in 49sec, Lady Drake (Foster) finishing some lengths away. This was further evidence of Beau Vite's improvement of late.

J. W. Lowe left for Awapuni this morning with Sunee, Good Sun, Yours Truly, and Punarua. Beaulivre was to have travelled north to Auckland in charge of H. Clout this afternoon. The other Trentham candidates for Awapuni will be leaving tomorrow.

P. Burgess will not now be at Auckland, but will do the three days instead at Awapuni. He will also pc at Wairarapa on the first day. His mounts. at Manawatu will include Royal Record, Ned Cuttle, and Majority. At Awapuni D. Lamb's only definite mount is Night Eruption. J. McCauley will be riding on the West Coast circuit, where he has been engaged for Skyrena, Alby, Contract, and Rebel Rank.
