MR. J. A. STRANG

The late Mr. James Allan Strang, whose death occurred in England last week at the age of 73, studied as a youth for marine engineering arid was at sea for a short time. Because of ill health he was forced to give it up, and with his two brothers he came to New Zealand as a young man 50 years ago. They took up farming on the Oroua Downs. Later they shifted to Palmerston North, where they took an active interest in the game ,of polo, and their ponies gained a widespread reputation for quality. The brothers formed a well-known polo team, not only in New Zealand but in Australia and England, to which countries they took their own ponies, winning many games against- good sides. In his later years Mr. Strang was an enthusiastic golfer, being one of the best known members of the Wellington Golf Club. After residing'at Heretaunga for some years he sold his residence there a few months ago and went on a holiday trip to England, accompanied by his wife and daughter, Mrs. Dorothy, Ashford. Mrs. Strang is a daughter of the late Mr. Nicholas 'Reid. | Mr. Strang was well known in commercial circles in New Zealand. He was chairman ,of directors of the Gear Meat Company, and a director of the Taupo Timber Company.
