COMMONS DEBATE

PRESS TRIBUTES TO PREMIER

(British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, October 1. ' It is expected that immediately the House of Commons reassembles on Monday the motion for the adjournment will be moved to permit a full statement by Mr. Chamberlain on the Munich discussions and the subsequent events, including in particular his private talk with Herr Hitler. A debate will probably follow, and the newspapers anticipate that it may extend over three Parliamentary days. Mr. Chamberlain's tumultuous welcome home is the .subject of lengthy descriptive articles in the Press. Comment in newspapers of all shades of opinion is unanimous in paying tribute to his indefatigable and successful efforts to avoid war. Details of the terms of the agreement reached are criticised in many quarters, but the tributes paid to Mr. Chamberlain are wholehearted. The "Daily Telegraph" says that never for a moment has he spared himself in pursuit of his mission for peace. No one can deny him the honours of a noble battle nobly won. The "Manchester Guardian," which frankly recognises the high price which has been paid for peace, says that even the pacifists of Munich have done ■ something that has hardly ever happened in history before —the snatching of the world at the eleventh hour out of a universal calamity, a return to barbarism, and untold misery. "The Times," like several other ne\o»papers, takes the view that even this great service to humanity is already beginning to appear the lesser half of Mr. Chamberlain's work at Munich. He himself announced it as the prelude to a larger settlement. Meanwhile, it is felt that the prospects for an orderly carrying out of the transfer of the Sudeten territory have been greatly enhanced by the tenor of the broadcast speeches delivered in Prague by General Siroyy, the Premier, and General Krejci, which are highly appreciated in London.
