YACHTING

MURITAI CLUB'S MEETING

The second annual general meeting of the Muritai Yacht Club was held in the Masonic Hall, Eastbourne, recently. There was an excellent attendance of members, the chair being occupied by Captain Wilkinson.

Officers for the 1938-39 season were elected as follows:—Patron, the Mayor (Mr. E. Wise); president, Mr. A. Walker; vice-presidents, Captain Anson, Dr. D. Isaacs, and Messrs. C. L. Bishop, S. Shearer, A. Harvey, H. Rudolph, R. Haughton, D. Bowie, A. S. Wansborough, W. Bennet, A. E. Burch, and W. H. Kent; commodore, Captain Wilkinson; vice-commodore, Captain Gower; rear-commodore, Mr. W. McDonald; hon. secretary, Mr. L. 0. Wansbrough; hon. treasurer, Mr. G. W. Lyon; general' committee, Messrs. W. Mahood, H. Marsden, P. Jenkinson, I. Kirk, N. Boyd, and R. Stagg; handicapper, Mr. I. Kirk; starter, timekeeper, and judge, Mr. W. Mahood; sailing committee, Messrs. I. Kirk, H. Marsden, and G. Lyon; racing secretary, Mr. H. Marsden; hon. auditor, Mr. A. O. Wansbrough; measurer, Mr. L. Kirk; delegates to W.P.Y. and M.B. Association, Messrs. I. Kirk, H. Marsden, and G. Lyon. In view of the late opening of the Muritai Yacht Club, the season can be considered to have been highly successful. The first official event was a race held at Eastbourne on May 1, 1938, when boats from other clubs competed with the Muritai Club's boats for the two trophies presented by Mr. I. Kirk. The race was won by the Conquest, the first Muritai boat home being the Wellesley 11, skippered by I. Kirk. This race was the first and last race of the Muritai Yacht Club for the 1937-38 season, and also closed the season for other clubs.

Subscriptions and donations amounted to £38 in the five months that the club has been functioning. Expenses amounted to £27, leaving a balance of £11 to start the new season with. In view of the fact that members were only paying half subscriptions, and that most of the expenditure has been towards cost of materials for the club's boatsheds, the financial position of the club can be considered most satisfactory. Mention was made of Mr. A. E. Burch's donation to the club of £6 6s, which he has offered as prize-money for an opening race. This race is open to all yachtsmen in Wellington -who have centreboard boats of fourteen-feet overall or under. Skippers only need be financial members of their clubs. Mr. C. Watk'ns has presented a trophy to the club for the champion Idle Along of the coming season, and this and several other trophies that have been presented to the club, will be keenly comIpeted for during the summer.
