MORE CLUBS OPEN

SATURDAY'S CEREMONIES

Wellington tennis clubs beginning their new season were again favoured with fine weather on Saturday, and there were good attendances at most courts in the city and suburbs. Most of the Wellington clubs are now officially open. .KARORI CLUB. A record attendance of ninety members was at the Karori Lawn Tennis Club's courts when the 1938-39 season was opened by Mr. R. A. Wright. In the absence of the president, Mr. B. G. H. Burn, Mr. Wright was introduced by the chairman of the club's committee, Mr. L. Randall, who mentioned that among those present were two life members, Mr. Gordon Henderson and Miss Hackworth. The Wellington Lawn Tennis Association was represented by Messrs. A. J. Dunnett and E. G. Nevitt. Mr. Wright complimented the club on the progressive policy it had followed and said that.the sound state of the club's finances was a tribute to the manner in which its affairs had been conducted. He hoped that the club would have a successful season. Mr. Nevitt expressed the hope that the club would again enter a number of teams in the association's competitions and that more success would be achieved than last season.' He also drew attention to the association's junior coaching scheme and asked the club to send forward the names of any promising young players. He made an appeal for support for the Umpires' Association. Colonel G. T. Hall, a vice-president, who has attended almost all the club's opening functions, also spoke. Mr. Wright then presented trophies won during last season and proceeded to. hit the first ball over the net. TE OPE CLUB. The Te Ope Municipal Tennis Club's season was opened by the president (Mr. R. E. Armstrong), who welcomed members and visitors and thanked the W.L.T.A. for its help last season, particularly in regard to drawing up new rules for the club. He mentioned a lecture which is to be given by Mr. R. McL. Ferkins next Monday. Mr. K. Dyer, on behalf of the W.L.T.A., spoke of the enthusiasm within the club, and mentioned the junior coaching, adding that the association would be pleased to help in any way. Mr. D. Symes, who represented the Umpires' Association, conveyed the best wishes of his association to the club for a successful season. He said that at the last general meeting of the Umpires' Association about half those present were members of the Te Ope Club. The first ball was served by Mrs. Armstrong, wife of the president, after which an exhibition doubles match was played between Don France and K. Dyer' and Neil Edwards and T. Lyons. BROADWAY CLUB. The opening of the Broadway Tennis Club was held on the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association's courts at Miramar as the club's own courts are being relayed and will not be ready until about the end of this month. The official opening will then jbe held. The club president (Mr, J. F. Forrester) declared the club's season open and congratulated members on the past season and expressed the hope that this one would be even more successful. Mrs. Forrester served the first ball.: There were 40 members present. The Wellington Lawn Tennis Association was represented by Mr. W. W. Stirling. KARORI WEST CLUB. The president, Mr. R. A. Wright, opened the season for the Karori West Club. He congratulated the club on its showing last season and mentioned the need of additional courts to accommodate would-be members who were on the waiting list. There were about seventy members present. In an exhibition match, R. McL. Ferkins and S. Painter beat G. Pearce and M. Ferkins, 6-3. ST. ANNE'S CLUB. About fifty were present at the opening of the season at St. Anne's Club, Newtown, the ceremony being performed by the president, the Rev. Father Walsh. Mr. P. Turkington represented the Wellington Catholic Lawn Tennis Association. Afternoon tea was served, after which a Yankee tournament was held. WADESTOWN CLUB. Mr. A. Parlane, the president, opened the Wadestown Club's season in the presence of about eighty members and friends. Mrs. Parlane served the first ball. Mr. H. L. Wise, representing the Wellington Lawn, Tennis Association, wished the club every success and reminded members that the association would be pleased to have nominations of likely players for the junior coaching scheme..
