SPORTS CLUBS' FUNCTIONS

Runners-up for three years, the Petone Rugby League Football Club celebrated its appearance at the top of the championship lists this year with an exceedingly enjoyable dance in the Labour Hall, Petone, on Friday evening, when the individual, inter-club, and championship awards were made. Mr. G. Bassant, president of the St. George Club, in handing over the championship cup, which the St. George team has/held for the past three years, to the chairman of the Wellington Rugby League Board (Mr. W. T. Holland), for re-presentation, said that it gave his club great pleasure to do so las they felt that there were no more worthy opponents than the Petone Club, who had worked splendidly and well deserved the honour. Mr. Holland endorsed his remarks and congratulations in making the presentation to the vice-captain, Mr. J. O'Connor. Other successes of the club included the Randwick and Wisnesky Cups for victories in both grades of the contests between Petone and Randwick teams, one draw and one win in matches with the champion 'Taranaki team, and the position of runners-up in the knock-out tournament. Mr. V. Noble, president, thanked all those who had supported the club through its early and difficult years, especially Mr. F. Wisnesky, the secretary and manager, whose support had been of inestimable value. Mr, Wisnesky replied. The official part also included Mrs. H. Holland, Mrs. V. Noble, Mrs. F. Wisnesky, Mrs. R. Williams, Miss V. Pudney, and Messrs. L. Patterson, O. Nicholls, J. Stevens, and T. Nixon. The gaily-decorated hall made a colourful setting for the many pretty frocks of the dancers who responded enthusiastically to the excellent music of a Maori band. An exhibition of tapdancing by Miss Elva White (who was effectively costumed in a page-boy suit of white satin with silver accessories) gave much pleasure to the spectators. Trophies Presented. As a wind-up to the winter season the Hutt Rugby Football Club held a dance in the Horticultural Hall, Lower Hutt, on Friday night, at which the trophies won during the season were presented by the president, Sir Alexander Roberts. There was a large attendance of members and friends, and the function was highly successful. An excellent orchestra supplied dance music, and the M.C.s were Messrs. T. Denby and W. Scullion. The red and white of the club's colours were featured in the decorations of japonica and may-blossom in the supper-room. The committee responsible for the arrangements comprised Mr. H. E. McBain (chairman) and Mrs. Mcßain, Mr..j C. W. Dudding (secretary) and Mrs. Dudding, Mr. H. Skelton (treasurer), and Mrs. Skelton, Mr. and Mrs. F. Feeney, Mr. and Mrs. R. Douglas, Mr. and Mrs. S. R. Wickham, Mr. and Mrs. H. R. Baker.. Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Slater, and Messrs. H. Julian, E. F. Barry, H. Whitcher, G. E. Tresider, and W. Wilson. Opportunity was taken of presenting Mr. E. Griffin with a crystal salad set to mark his-recent marriage. Mrs. Griffin accompanied her husband, and wore a gown of tabac-brown ninon. Sir Alexander Roberts congratulated the club on a most successful season and presented the trophies. Dances on Saturday. With an early summer treading hard upon the heels of a long winter season, extended through bad weather; the concluding dances and presentations of many winter sports associations are being held as well as the opening i functions of tennis, croquet, and cricket clubs. In the Hutt Valley this has been particularly noticeable in the last few weeks. On Saturday night a football dance, a harrier club dance, and two tennis club dances were held in Lower Hutt, a large attendance of members and friends being present at each. • The annual social and dance of the Hutt Association Football Club was held in the R.S.A. rooms, which were gay with red and white streamers intertwined with green, while deep window boxes filled with spring greenery struck an attractive note. An excellent band was in attendance, and tenor solos by Mr. J. Fordie and a Hungarian dance in costume by Miss Barbara Dawson gave much pleasure to ! the guests. The social committee . consisted of Mr. A. J. Gearing (president) and Mrs. Gearing, Mr. A. K. Batchelor and Mrs. Batchelor (social secretary), Mr. and Mrs. J. McDougal, Mr. and Mrs. E. Webb, Mr. and Mrs. J. Bell, Mr. and Mrs. A. McPhee. Mr. and Mrs. Phillips, and Mr and Mrs. B. Brown. Harrier Club Celebrates. At the wind-up dance of the C.V.M. Harrier Club, which was held in the i Tuarua Hall, Market Street, the pre- j sentation of trophies was made by Mr. A. E. Werry, vice-president of the club, who was accompanied by Mrs^Werry. The club championship was won by G. Hepplestone, and the following awards made: Sealed handicap, S. Hepplestone; eight-mile race, G. Reardon; novice race, K. Parry; consolation race, D. Peters; most improved novice, L. Mitchell; most improved runner, D. Peters; first novice in Robbie Shield race, L. Mitchell. A feature of the evening was the dance music played by the Band of the Ist Battalion of the Wellington Regiment, whose scarlet coats and clear-cut military time was appreciated by all. A delicious supper was served by the attentive hosts, the committee comprising Mr. K. H. Brooker (secretary), Mr. B. G. Stonehouse (treasurer), Messrs. G. Nicholson, A. Callaghan, A. Thomas, and A. Wilson, and the Misses B. and L. Everard. Opening the Courts. The ceremony of opening the courts of the St. Peter and St. Paul Tennis Club was performed on Saturday afternoon by the Rev. Father Daly before a large attendance of members and visitors. The Rev. Father thanked the members of the committee for their fine work generally and especially for the topdressing and numerous improvements to the courts. A Yankee tournament was played, the winners being Miss B. Plummer and Mr. A. Suckroo, and an informal dance followed in the evening. The club committee comprised the Rev. Father Callaghan (president), Messrs. N. Darby (secretary). C. McManus, D. Barry, P. J. McMenamin, F. Posselt, J. O'Sullivan, Mrs. F. Posselt, and Misses E. Darby and M. O'Brien. Eastern Hutt. The opening of the Eastern Hutt I Tennis Club's season was marked by j a dance and the presentation of trophies from the previous season by ; the president, Mr. Walter Dyer. These were:—Men's singles championship, C. i Wesley; ladies'. Miss M. Lawrence; men's doubles, A. G. Smith and H. "G. Flux; ladies'. Misses M. Lawrence and M. Waldie; combined, E. J. Labour Party Entertain. There was a very large attendance at Birch Street Hall on Saturday evening, when the Lower Hutt branch o£ the Labour Party held another of its popular dances. The new decorations, now complete, lent a sparkling attrac* tiveness to the hall, with concealed lighting throwing up the emerald, cerise, and bright silver of the harp motifs on the stage. In the hall stream* ers and shaded lights in the same colours made an effective overhead decoration. A varied programme of modern and old-time dance music was supplied by an excellent orchestra, and Mr^ J. Colman was M.C. Two Monte Carlo numbers were won by Mr. E. Jones and Miss F. Rowling and Mr. L. Marsh and Miss E. Patterson. The ladies of the committee were in charge of tha supper, the general committee including Mr. W. Jarvie (chairman) and Mrs Jarvie, Mr. W. Clout (social secretary) and Mrs. Clout, Mr.; and Mrs. J. Colman, Mrs. E. Cocker, and Messrs M. Colman, J. E. Smith, T. Muir, Q, Drylie, R. Scott, G. Lamont, and R, Collins.
