GIRL DIVER
EUROPEAN TITLE WON
A 17-year-old girl, Betty Slade, gave Britain its first title in the European swimming championship at the Empire Pool, Wembley. She won the women's springboard diving championship with 103.60 points. Miss Slade was the smallest of the competitors for the event, being only 4ft 6in in height. Another British girl. Miss Edna Child, was third, Miss Daumerlang (Germany) obtaining second place.
Miss Slade began diving at the age of 13 and two years ago won the springboard diving championship of England at her first attempt. She won that title again in 1937 and has retained it for a year. Her coach, who is a former Sussex diving champion, was impressed by a casual observation of her at the Ilford Baths one day, and persuaded her to take up diving, promising to make her a national champion.
