A CHOICE OF POSITIONS
That he had been offered the alternative of going to Samoa as Administrator or accepting the position of Chairman %>£ Committees was stated by Mr. E. J. Howard, Labour candidate for Christchurch South, at Addington, on Thursday evening, reports the "Press." Those offers came from the Prime Minister (Mr. Savage). Mr. Savage said: "I want a Chairman of Committees, and I also want an Administrator for Samoa." The job in Samoa offered all sorts of fine things, Mr. Howard said— the salary was decent and the Coronation was coming on. There was the prospect of a trip Home and being called "Your Excellency." He thought then of the time he had carried the hod. "It was a great temptation to me. I asked for, time to consider the proposition. Finally, I went to the Cabinet, being called in to discuss the position. I then said that I would even sweep out the rooms for the Government if that could help them in their administration. I did not want to go out of New Zealand unless I had to. So I asked for the job of Chairman of Committees."
